Language Disorders Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive. Receptive language disorders refer to the inability to process or understand language. Expressive language disorders include difficulty putting words together to form a thought, limited vocabulary, or the inability to use language in a socially acceptable manner. Language intervention activities include interaction with a child by using play activities and talking with the child. Books, pictures and objects may be used to elicit responses. Therapist also use modeling and repetition exercises to build language development. Communication tips for parents to increase language development may include talking with your child about daily events and what they see or hear. Take time to listen to your child and tell them what they are seeing and doing. Reading to your child is an excellent way to increase vocabulary and language development.
