Journalism is designed to train students in all aspects of
yearbook production. Design, layout, copywriting, photography,
marketing, and finance are some of the areas covered. Students in this
course will produce the Thomasville City Schools' yearbook, Thomisana.
Students must register for both terms.

Students will gain extensive experience, learning various
ways to appeal to audiences. Practice in diction, intonation, and voice
modification will be emphasized. Students in this course will also write
and produce the school's daily radio and television show.
- ENGLISH 9
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
English 9 is designed for students working on grade
level. It is appropriate for students considering vocational or business
classes. Emphasis is placed on mastering grammar skills. The
writing process will be integrated with the study of literature.
Emphasis is on mastering basic elements, writing paragraphs in response to
literature, and establishing relevance to contemporary life.
Throughout the course, vocabulary study and spelling are integrated with other
material. Students will read four novels.
- COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH 9
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
College Prep English 9 is designed for students working
above grade level. This course involves less review and more independent
reading than English 9. Composition, grammar, literature and
spelling/vocabulary are integrated together. Emphasis is placed on oral
communication as it relates to human experience. Students will read five
novels.
- ADVANCED ENGLISH 10
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Advanced English 9 is intended for students working well
above grade level. It is fast-paced, requires more independent reading,
and provides less review than regular English. An intensive study of
composition, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary will be correlated with the
study of literature. Students will read six novels.
- ENGLISH 10
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
English 10 is designed for students who read and write at
grade level. This course integrates the study of selected world
literature with writing skills. Grammar and usage are taught to improve
writing skills. The study of literature emphasizes understanding
literature as a record of human experiences. The class uses various
genres to focus on practical writing skills. Vocabulary centers on
work-related words and phrases. Students will read five novels.
- COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH 10
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
College Prep English 10 coordinates all phrases of the
process of communication. Literature is used as a thinking and writing
tool. Writing concentrates on the student's response to
literature. Critical-thinking skills are explored through a study of
vocabulary, literature, and grammar. Oral communication skills are
integrated into the course. Students will read six novels.
- ADVANCED ENGLISH 10
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Advanced English 10 coordinates all the strands of
communication. The various literary genres are used as thinking and
writing tools. Critical-thinking skills are integrated into the
course. Students will read eight novels.
- ENGLISH 11
Prerequisite: Teacher
English 11 will provide opportunities for the students to
learn to communicate thoughts in an organized, coherent form. It will
review and teach, when appropriate, the skills necessary to pass the Alabama
High School Exit Exam. Students will study major American authors and
their works, reading five novels.
- COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH 11
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
College Prep English 11 will reinforce the grammar and
mechanics for this grade level concurrently with specific writing focus.
American literature will be covered from the Colonial Period through the
Twentieth Century. Extensive reading of seven novels is part of the
curriculum. Essay writing, vocabulary, and oral communications will also
be included. A major research paper is required.
- ADVANCED ENGLISH 11
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Advanced English 11 is a study of sentence, paragraph, and
essay structures to prepare students for AP English. Students will learn
the major authors, works, and literary periods of American literature in
chronological order. They will be exposed to all major genres, will
learn to write literary analysis essays, and will read at least nine
additional novels. Vocabulary and oral communication are also
included. A major research paper is required.
- ENGLISH 12
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
English 12 integrates a historical survey of British
literature with a study of grammar and composition. The students will
survey major authors, works, and literary periods of British literature.
Students will engage in critical listening, speaking, reading, and writing
activities designed to integrate the strands of the language arts and develop
further their thinking and problem-solving abilities. The study of
literature and the writing process will culminate in a formal research
project. The student will be required to read seven novels.
- COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH 12
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
College Prep English 12 is a study of the diction, syntax,
and essay patterns required in freshman English courses. The student
will learn the major authors, works, and literary periods of British
literature, will be exposed to all major genres, and will learn to write
literary analysis essays. In addition to a more detailed, analytical
treatment of reading material required in Regular English 12, the advanced
level includes the reading of eight complete novels. A major research
paper is required.

The course content of AP Composition and Literature is
guided by the College Board's The Advanced Placement Course of Study.
The course is designed for the truly advanced English student who wants to
earn college credit or the advanced placement in college based upon the
results of the AP examination administered in May. Thus, the course is
structured to (1) focus on the diction, syntax, and essay patterns required in
English 101 courses; (2) provide instruction in writing the literary analysis
essay patterns; and (3) provide extensive training in the reading and essay
portions of the AP examination. Students will read and study nine
novels. Research papers are required. Students who register for
this course must take the AP exam.
