Project D.A.R.E. is a joint project of the Thomasville Police Department and the Thomasville City Schools to prevent drug abuse in children and youth. Traditional drug abuse programs dwell on the harmful effects of drugs. The program emphasis of Project D.A.R.E. is to help students recognize and resist the many subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol and marijuana. The D.A.R.E. programs are planned to focus on feelings related to self-esteem, interpersonal and communication skills, decision making, and positive alternatives to drug abuse behavior. The D.A.R.E. role models are older successful individuals that the younger students may look up to. They help dispel the myth that all kids use, and show the success of being drug free. They challenge the students to remain drug free, and to become involved with many activities while attending school.
