Thomasville school officials discuss prevention of coronavirus

By Barry H. Hendrix

Administration officials with the Thomasville City Schools District met March 12 to discuss steps to prevent the spread of flu and the coronavirus (COVID-19).

At this time, no COVID-19 cases have been identified in Alabama, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Custodians will continue to reinforce cleaning on the Thomasville Elementary School and Thomasville High School campuses. There will be special attention to cleaning and wiping high traffic areas and hard surfaces.

Additional hand sanitizer stations will be installed throughout the campuses.

Transportation staff will continue to daily clean school bus seats and hard surfaces.

Staff with the school system’s Child Nutrition Program (CNP) will begin to offer more pre-prepared, packaged items for breakfast and lunch.

Students, employees and members of the community are advised by school head nurse Candy Thompson to thoroughly wash their hands – for at least 20 seconds;

• cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow. If you sneeze or cough into a tissue, throw it in the trash right away;

• avoid touching their faces;

• and, if a student or employee has a fever, please stay home.

Thompson also asked that parents disinfect school bags.

No classes or school extracurricular events have been cancelled, although, school officials will continue to monitor guidance from the state Department of Education and the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
