THS football, volleyball workouts begin June 8

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has given high school athletes and coaches permission to begin summer workouts, beginning June 1.
Workouts for football and volleyball athletes at Thomasville High School will begin June 8.
Schools will be able to accept an athlete’s 2019-2020 physical form until the first fall practice date (July 27 for football and volleyball). Parents and students will need to use a new system to secure a pre-participation physical, Consent Release and Concussion form on file for the 2020-2021 school year.
THS coaches have always considered the health and safety of athletes paramount, said THS head football coach Jack Hankins Jr., and the new regulations under the current coronavirus pandemic, will see school coaches up their game. Coaches will work under current AHSAA and Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines.
There will be temperature screening of athletes, he said.
Cintas Corporation has been contracted by the Thomasville school system to do a complete sterilization of the campuses including locker rooms and the weight room, Hankins said. “After we get finished (with workouts), we’re wiping down everything,” he said.
“We’re going to take all precautions necessary,” said THS volleyball head coach Ashley Snow, “because we want to make sure we make it to game play. That consists of making sure players are aware of all the rules we have to follow at this time.”
“Group size is unlimited as long as physical distancing and all other current safety guidelines are maintained,” as stated on the AHSAA web site. Different sports teams cannot intermingle.
“Facial coverings are recommended to the greatest extent possible but should be worn when an activity requires a person to be closer than six feet and when entering common areas,” according to the AHSAA.
“All equipment and surfaces, including weights, benches, balls, bats, helmets, gloves, etc., should be cleaned after each group activity, individual workout, or skill development session.”
Sports programs cannot participate in any summer exhibition games, tournaments or camps.
The volleyball program will announce a date for tryouts in the coming weeks, Snow said.
The THS basketball program has not yet set a starting date for summer workouts.
For updated information, THS students and parents should contact their individual coach.
