Superintendent addresses handgun incident at Thomasville High

February 8, 2021
I wanted to alert all of our Tiger Family of an incident that occured today at Thomasville High School.
Today a 17-year-old male student at Thomasville High School was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun while on campus.
Thomasville High School Principal, Kyle Ferguson, received an anonymous tip that a student was in possession of a handgun on campus. Mr. Ferguson and the SRO (School Resource Officer) went immediately and removed the student from class to a secure location, and the handgun was located immediately after the student's removal from class. Since the student was removed immediately, the campus was not required to go into lockdown procedures.
The student and the weapon have been turned over to the Thomasville Police Department for processing.
I am very appreciative of the quick response to the situation once the tip was received. We are all alarmed by the incident that occurred at Thomasville High School today. However, having people do the right thing by reporting anything suspicious to a teacher or administrator is paramount in trying to keep everyone safe. We always tell our students that if they see something they need to say something immediately.
Thomasville City Schools will continue to do everything we possibly can on a daily basis to keep all of our students, faculty and staff safe. Finally, we will always strive to be transparent when it comes to sharing critical information with our families and stakeholders.
Thank you for your continued support,
Garth Moss
Superintendent
